Notes:

bullet

Netley is to the west of Southampton, and is now a suburb of it.

bullet

Based on information in an old family address book it seems Wilfred emigrated to Australia.

bullet

Flora's father was Archibald Griffin Rider who in 1881 (Ref: 1881 census) was recorded as being an Artist and Photographer and had a photographers shop at 11 Jewry Street in Winchester, Hampshire, England.

bullet

Flora's address is recorded as 11 Jewry Street at the time of her marriage to Harry.

bullet

She married Harry at St Peter's which is also in Jewry Street, Winchester.

bullet

Winnifred, who died aged just 6 months, is spelt with two letter 'n's, and not as 'Winifred' according to the contemporary notes kept by Madeline Bessie Green, shown below.

bullet

An entry in the Hampshire Chronicle of 26 Jan 1901records the birth of Eric.

bullet

See family photograph of Flora and Harry with some of their children. The photograph was taken by Archibald Griffin Rider, Flora's father who had a studio in 11 Jewry Street,  Winchester, Hampshire. Link to family photograph.

Notes:

bullet

The old photograph of Archibald's shop in Jewry Street Winchester, shown above, is taken from the book, 'In and Around Winchester in Old Photographs, collected by Edward Roberts'. The book dated 1977, ISBN 0 9504096 1 8, is probably long out of print. However, Mr Roberts is kind enough to say that many of the old photographs collected in the book were originally taken by Archibald Rider.

It would appear that Archibald is yet to discover his passion for photography.

One assumes that they have not been married long as she is only 19 and no children have arrived yet.

Notes - 1871 Census - Southampton:

bullet

It is odd that Emma Gradidge should be described as 'Companion to wife' and then have the 'Companion to' part erased. One suspects that the intention was to put a line through the whole statement.

bullet

In moving from the 1861 census to the 1871 census the surname Graddidge has lost a 'd'.

bullet

Archibald is described as an assistant. Was he learning his trade before he set up on his own in Winchester?

bulletIs Emma Gradridge, Sarah's mother? Yes!
bullet11 Jewry Street is the address for Archibald's photography business, where they were living over the shop.
bullet11 Jewry Street is now a popular drinks bar known as 'Tree House'.
bulletHow was it that Archibald William was born in Hammersmith?
bulletOn the original census return Flora Annie is squeezed in above Emma Gradidge as if she was forgotten about and entered as an after thought.

Census return of 1901 for Harry and Flora's family

1901 Census - St John's, Sidcup, Kent, England

Residence Name Relation Condition Age Profession or Occupation Where born
Lynton Harry W. Green Head Married 38 Buyer Iron & Steel Netley, Hampshire
- Flora Green Wife Married 32 - Southampton, Hampshire
- Gerald Green Son Single 9 - Stratford, London
- Wilfred Green Son Single 1 - Fulham, London
- Eric Green Son Single 2 months - Sidcup, Kent
- Jane Green Mother Widow 58 - Andover, Hampshire
Notes - 1901 Census - Sidcup:
bulletThe area covered by this census appears quite large, since the area is part of the Civil Parish and Urban District of Chiselhurst, the ecclesiastical Parish of Sidcup, and Parliamentary Borough or Division of Sevenoaks. So the population must have been quite sparse in those days, i.e. you were in the open country, unlike today where it is part of the urban sprawl of London.
bulletAn old address book records Harry and his family as living at 65 Hatherley Road, Sidcup, Kent. Is this the house called Lynton?
bulletHarry seems to have moved around quite a lot based on the different places his children were born.
bulletJane appears to be living with Harry her son. Of her other living children, Ernest is in Canada, Fred is married and living with his family in Wandsworth, London, (Link to Fred's Family)
bulletMadeline Bessie is in the Tooting Workhouse, and Ada is in the LSWR Railwaymen's Orphanage, probably at Clapham and before it moved to Woking.
bulletOne wonders if further searching will reveal more children.
