Notes:

bullet

Considering the small pool of names usually associated with the Needle family, Ann Julian chose a very different range of names for her children. It would be interesting to know if these names reflect the pool of names common in her family.

bullet

Burgate is a village about two miles north of Fordingbridge, right on the western border of Hampshire.

bullet

Roche is a village about five miles north of St Austell in Cornwall, but what was Annie doing so far from Cornwall?

The residence is shown as Leckford, but we don't known whereabouts in Leckford they lived.

William's job is shown as 'Ag Lab', which is short hand for Agricultural Labourer. This abbreviation crops up endlessly in census returns, thus showing how many people were employed on the land.

Notes: 1881 Census - Longstock:
bullet

Sarah does not appear on the 1881 census. She would have been 13 - 14 years old, so was she an infant death or was she staying somewhere else that night?

bullet

It looks as though the family moved to 'The Grange', Longstock, about 1875.

bullet

The style of census form used for institutions was a little different from the standard household form. The term 'Officer' is one of the options allowed on this form, the others being; Wife, Son, or other relative, Visitor, Officer, Servant, and &c., and inmates must have their designation stated. NB What does '&c.' mean?

Notes:

bullet

Kelly's Directory for 1899 in the entry for Longstock, shows William Needle as the Water Bailiff to Joshua East Esq.

bullet

Joshua East lived at Longstock House and held the seat of Lord of the Upper Manor (there is a house in Longstock called Upper Manor Farm House). However he died in 1900 aged 91 and the responsibility passed to his wife Mrs East. It appears that it was Joshua's death that prompted a change of ownership of the River Rights as shown in the 1903 Directory - see below.

bullet

Mary has moved on from being a servant to running her own business with her sister. She  and Hannah are now living 'over the shop' in Stockbridge. The census shows Hannah as having been born in Longstock but this may be an error.

Notes:
bullet

Kelly's Directory for 1903 has an entry for Stockbridge, that reads 'Needle M & H (Misses) Tobacconist, High Street'. The 1907 edition has a similar entry. There is no entry for them or a Tobacconist in the 1899 edition. Kelly's Directory was published roughly every 3 or 4 years

General Notes:
bullet

Annie Needle (William's second wife) always appeared for any family 'do', weddings, funerals, etc., even when she wasn't invited so the rumour says. She was always very smartly dressed and drove a pony and trap, often to visit her solicitor in Winchester.

bullet

Of her two sons, 'Monty' was believed to be the tallest policeman in London at the time. On looking at the photographs of Ann (Aunt Annie) she herself was very tall and clearly passed on the tall gene.

bullet

Horace was manager of Anna Valley Motors in Andover through the 1940s.

bullet

Family sources tell me that although she always well dressed, often with a wide brimmed hat, her house was dirty and untidy, but I expect that she wouldn't like that to be too well known!

bullet

She is reputed to have owned the fishing rights on the stretch of the River Test at the bottom of her garden, though this is less likely. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the overflow cemetery at Longstock parish church.
