bulletThomas is boarding with Joseph Schofield whose occupation is Railway Servant; he was born in Halifax, Yorkshire.
bulletThis particular census sheet is of a lane in a town and when the origins of the people are examined they come form far and wide, whereas a census sheet from a country village will show most of the inhabitants were born locally.

Notes - 1891Census - Winchfield:
bulletThe family have moved to Winchfield from Battersea and his employment as the Station Master at Clapham Junction to that of Station Master at Winchfield, so that Thomas can enjoy lighter duties due to his poor health.
bulletIt is interesting that Battersea was in London in 1881 but is part of Surrey in 1891. Was this fact or a matter of a misunderstanding as to where the county boundaries were?
bulletThings are working out well for Madeline Bessie Green as she is learning a useful skill.
bulletIn addition to the above S. Wooldridge, a fifteen year old girl was living in as a Domestic General Servant.
bulletAda Marion Green has been born in Florence Villa, is this where the name for her first child came from?

1901 Census Return of all Persons who slept or abode in this Institution on the night of Sunday, March 31st 1901

Tooting Home, London
Name Relation to Head of Family, or Position in the Institution Condition Age Profession or Occupation Where Born
Madeline Green Inmate Single 27 Dressmaker Battersea, London
Notes - 1901 Census - Tooting:
bulletThe Tooting Home is a Workhouse. Judging by the census return that runs to some 25 pages, the workhouse was very large. Madeline is working as a dressmaker.
bulletThe term 'Inmate' is one of the options allowed in the 'Relation to ....' column on this form, the others being; Wife, Son, or other relative, Visitor, Officer, Servant, and &c.,. Inmates must have their designation stated, but it is not clear what designation means. NB What does '&c.' mean?
bulletMadeline Bessie appears to have lived somewhere else after living in Winchfield and before being in the Tooting Workhouse.  An entry in Ada Marion Green/Needle's address book reads 'Grannies Bessie 90 Fairfield Road'. Where is Fairfield Road?
