Emma M. Needle

1861 - ?

Emma and Louisa, shown right, are on the 1871 census as the children of Jacob, and they clearly cannot be Hannah's children as she is beyond child bearing age. So, whose children are they? Why would Jacob name two of his children after two of his existing children? Theories, yes, but more investigation is necessary.

A second Emma Elizabeth, born 1883, is known to be the daughter of Joseph and Ruth Needle. For the moment both Emma E. and Louisa remain a mystery.

bullet

Lower Clatford appears to have been swallowed up by Goodworth Clatford.

- Joseph Needle Son Single 2 - Leckford, Hants
- Elizabeth Needle Daughter Single 3 Months - Leckford, Hants

bulletThe lack of detail in the 'Residence' column makes it difficult to work out where they are living at this time. Jacob is an agricultural labourer with a growing young family.

1871 Census - Wherwell, Hampshire, England.
Residence Name Relation Condition Age Profession or Occupation Where Born
Seven Stars Inn, Testcombe Jacob Needle Head Married 56 Innkeeper Wherwell, Hants
- Hannah Needle Wife Married 53 - Lower Clatford, Hants
- Emma E. Needle Daughter Single 3 Scholar Leckford, Hants
- Louisa Needle Daughter Single 1 month - Leckford, Hants
Notes - 1871 Census - Wherwell:
bullet By 1871 Jacob is no longer an Ag Lab, he and his family have moved to the Seven Stars Inn. It would be interesting to know how that happened.
bulletThe two children Emma E. and Louisa have appeared but who is their mother? The census return says that they are Joseph's children but their true idenity remains a mystery. They could well be his grandchildren but who are their parents?
bulletOn this census Hannah has put in that she was born in Lower Clatford. On a reproduction of the 1885 Ordnance Survey map, Lower Clatford is identified along with Upper Clatford and Goodworth Clatford. However, on the current Ordnance Survey maps Lower Clatford no longer exists, though the other two villages still do. Lower Clatford is to the west of Goodworth Clatford and to the south of Upper Clatford. Lower Clatford seems to have been swallowed up by Goodworth Clatford. - Hannah Needle Wife Married 63 - Clatford, Hants
- Emma (Mary) Needle Daughter Single 20 Barmaid Leckford, Hants
Notes - 1881 Census - Wherwell:
bullet By 1881 the only child left at home is Emma Mary all the others appear to have left home. What happened to Emma E. (expected age 13) and Louisa (expected age 9/10)?
bullet After this date Jacob is still at the Seven Stars (as on the 1891 census) but is retired, his wife Hannah having died. (Link to Jacob on the 1891 census.)
